So you’ve got a camera. You’ve got your room decorated. You’re ready to start filming.

Or are you?

The single most important factor for home video recording quality, more important than even your camera, is lighting.

And no, that doesn’t mean turning on the floor lamp and the overhead light.

You’ve gotta consider the white balance, the color, the intensity, and above all the positioning of your lights.

But is it possible to get pro-quality lighting without a pro budget?

We took a look at all the best home recording lighting options, so you don’t have to.

Read on to make your next video your best ever:

Working with what you’ve got

So maybe you’ve got a lighting budget, and that budget is Zero.

That’s ok. You can still make do, and get better results than you have now, with what you’ve got lying around the house.

There’s a principle in photography called Three-Point Lighting, and if you apply this theory (even without professional equipment), you’re gonna notice the results right away.

Here is an excellent tutorial for achieving solid three-point lighting, at home, using stuff you definitely already have. (Nobody tell him that a porn blog linked to his video, ok?)

Prismatic LED Halo Ring Light

Ever watched a YouTube makeup tutorial? Let’s be honest – we all have. Even I can appreciate the skill and finesse that goes into a good contour.

If you’ve seen one, and we all know you have, you’ve probably seen one of these ring lights somewhere in the frame.

These do a phenomenal job given the pricepoint, they mount to your camera so the subject always stays lit, and the LED bulbs give great light color and will last for ages.

HOWEVER – you’ll still need ambient (i.e. background) lighting, otherwise the subject will be washed out. Another potential con to using ring lights is that you can sometimes see ‘em reflected in people’s eyeballs on camera. However, as Mark Rockwell says, "most people enjoy the little 'donut' in the girl's eyes."

A good one clocks in around $200, and it’s absolutely worth the investment.

Fovitec StudioPRO

Ready to get pro with it? High-level production needs high-level lighting.

This kit from Fovitec includes two bi-color LED panels, with barndoor shutters, tripods and carrying case.

What does that all mean?

It means two of your three light sources are covered, you can move ‘em anywhere, and you can control how much or how little light to let out with the doors.

Check out a lighting comparison to see what a difference this kinda thing can make.

These are, however, not cheap – the set of two, with accessories, is gonna run you around $350.

OK, so you’ve got your lights. But to achieve true 3-point lighting, you need more than just lights.

You need something for ‘em to bounce off of.

This can be as simple as a white piece of Bristol board, or a sheet of tinfoil, or as elaborate as this.

What’s most important is your technique. There are lots of tutorials out there, but the best thing you can do is experiment with your scene, setting and lighting to see what gives you the best results.

No matter what type of lighting you can afford, if you apply these principles you’ll see a major difference in the quality of the videos you produce.

And as we all know, better quality = more streams, more sales and more cash.

Camera Guide

For your content to sell well, you know you have to look good and feel good.

But what about your videos themselves?

In the information age, any content creator in any niche, mainstream or otherwise, has to raise the bar for production standards to get noticed.

That means, whether you’re a YouTuber, a musician, or a model, production quality needs to be on your mind at all times.

But not everybody has thousands of dollars to spend on a pro home studio setup.

So what can content creators do to make sure their videos and photos look as professional as possible?

It all starts with your setup.

We know that your equipment and room setup depends a lot on your budget. So we broke it down for you by budget. Can you afford $5000 for a camera? Great – we’ve got you covered. Capping out at $100? No prob – we’ve got you, too.

Regardless of your budget, there are a few key features you need in a camera. So no matter what you end up getting, make sure it has:

  1. Autofocus

  2. 1080p recording (at least)

  3. 30fps

It’s also important to remember that the best camera in the world is useless without good lighting. You’ll also probably need an external microphone for capturing great audio.

For pretty much every camera on this list, there are YouTube reviews available with example footage. So for a better idea of what you’re getting into, just search the camera model name on YouTube.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the best home recording cameras for any budget:

Logitech C922x

The gold standard for streamers. Keep in mind this is a webcam, so you’re not getting cinematic-level quality. But it’s got autofocus, it shoots 1080p, and it’s under 100 bucks.

Logitech C920

VERY similar to the C922x. Officially discontinued, but if you can find it, it’s more or less the same thing as the 922x - but cheaper.

Microsoft LifeCam Studio

One of the only well-recommended webcams that isn’t made by Logitech, the LifeCam Studio shoots 1080p, has autofocus, and has a built-in microphone (but you’ll want an external one anyway).

It has a tripod mount, too, so you can set it up in different locations.

GoPro Hero6

The best autofocus on the market for anything with lots of motion. Wink wink. You’ve seen these used for extreme sports, but let’s not discount our own athleticism. The integrated microphone is decent, so you might get away with only using that. However – you’ll need a case for it that lets sound into the mic. The stock waterproof case is sealed, so the sound doesn’t work great. We recommend The Frame – GoPro’s camera mount gives easy access (again, wink wink) to both the microphone and USB/HDMI ports.

Used DSLRs

If you don’t mind a pre-loved camera, check local buy-and-sell websites for deals on used gear. You can probably find any of the cameras in our <$1000 category for around $500 if they’re used. Just make sure you trust the seller, since you won’t get a warranty with it.

In this pricerange we’re getting into DSLR camera bodies and HD Camcorders. This is for when you’ve got a bit of money to throw around, and you wanna seriously upgrade your production value. If it’s good enough for the world’s top YouTubers, and even some indie filmmakers, it’s good enough for you.

Canon G7 X mk2 - ~$679 USD

This is a workhorse of the home video production world. It’s got a flip-out viewscreen (so you can see yourself as you’re recording), shoots in 1080p, takes amazing photos, and it’s got auto-focus. Think of it as a c922, but with a major upgrade in terms of video quality. The stock settings for white balance do a great job, and it’s got remote shooting controls for your smartphone or tablet. Pretty sweet.

Panasonic HC-X920 3MOS Ultrafine Full HD Camcorder

Your camera should be like you: Ultrafine.

Optimized for video, camcorders are gonna give you a more consistent image when shooting video as compared to a DSLR, which is designed primarily for still photos.

This is the perfect option if you want premium-quality HD video with minimal interference. It’s user-friendly, the autofocus is great, and you don’t need to fiddle with too many settings to get good results.

It’s got all the main features you need: flip-out viewfinder screen, 1080p video, autofocus, tripod mounts, et al.

Check out this decidedly strange test footage (my fav shot is at 0:29).

Canon EOS Rebel SL2 DSLR Camera (with lens)

With a lens, this one clocks in around $600. This is more or less the baseline for shooting good-quality video without a production-grade camcorder.

BestBuy has a good little starter kit including a memory card, additional lens and condenser microphone for juuuust under a grand (see the Frequently Bought Together section). If you don’t feel like thinking too much about what you’re gonna buy, this is a great out-of-the-box setup. Can’t go wrong.

The big guns. This section is for when you’re ready to take your content to new cinematic heights. Or maybe you want something that doubles for your career as a budding feature film director.

Sony RX100 VI

This is about as good as it gets for a point-and-shoot camera. It’s small, super-lightweight, and produces really incredible video quality. It’s equipped with Fast Hybrid AutoFocus, meaning your shots will stay in focus even with tons of movement.

Clocks in around $1200 for the base model.

Sony FDRAX53

We’re getting into cinematic quality here. The FDRAX53 shoots ultra-HD 4K and 20 megapixel still photos, it’s super light making for easy handheld shots, it’s got a flip-out viewscreen, good autofocus – this has more or less everything you need for incredible quality video. It even records Dolby 5.1 surround-sound, but I still wouldn’t rely on the built-in mic.

Get the full kit including lenses, lighting, tripod/monopod, microphone, and carrying case for about $2000.

Canon XA30 HD

Amazing autofocus. Professional-grade image stabilization. Full HD recording quality. This camera is firmly in the realm of “pro-sumer,” which means it’s good enough for professional applications but still (kinda) affordable.

Get the FULLLLL kit with literally everything you could ever need for about 3 grand.

Canon XF400

A heavy-duty camera for serious filmmakers, the Canon XF400 tops our list for most expensive, but also most full-featured, home camera.

Just shy of $3000 (that’s with NO accessories), this definitely isn’t a budget option. However, its professional-grade features, like a 1-inch photosensor, make it worth every penny – if you need the best video quality possible, that is. Honestly, this is probably overkill for most content creators, but if you want the very best, this is it.

Clearly, there’s a solution for any content creator on any budget.

Before you buy, do your own research – one of the best things you can do is check YouTube for sample footage. That’ll give you an excellent idea of what real-life results you can expect from your new camera.

And don’t forget – if you wanna save some cash, you can always buy used. Just make sure the camera seems to work well, since you won’t get a warranty that way.

Above all, remember that if you’re shooting indoors, the best camera in the world won’t help you without good lighting.

What do you shoot with? Let us know in the comments.

Model Citizens: Bryci

par: Andy

“The harder you work, the luckier you get.”

Where do we start with Bryci? She's worked in every aspect of the adult industry, from behind the camera to in front of it. She's a top-50 pornstar who never signed with an agency. She's a webmaster, marketer, coder, and all-around boss.

When somebody with a portfolio that impressive wants to talk about how she got to where she is today, you listen.

Don't let her humble tone dissuade you from the facts - Bryci is one of the most powerful people in porn today, and she's gonna tell you how she did it:

You’ve had an inspiring and unusual career arc – you started behind-the-scenes then transitioned to on-camera work, which is the opposite of what many people do. Can you tell us about your journey, how you got started, and what made you interested in performing?

I started in adult as a webmaster and affiliate marketer. My husband James and myself built up a network of pay-sites that we ran, and I built and maintained other websites with the main purpose only to promote other peoples pay-sites. After working with a few girls on their websites and seeing how much fun they were having, James and I decided to try it out ourselves and we really haven’t looked back. We still build and maintain pay-sites with other girls and couples that we work with along with our own pay site, Bryci.com.

You started in the industry as a webmaster and affiliate marketer for a network of amateur sites. What was that experience like?

It was like all the pieces of my life puzzle fell together, as hokey as that sounds!  I grew up in a computer oriented family, taught myself coding in my spare time, and have always enjoyed helping other people. So to put it all together, and in something as fun as adult, it’s just been a really fun ride.

Did you make enough money to get by doing those things?

We did yes, through a lot of work and long hours. Isn’t there a saying, “The harder you work, the luckier you get?” That seems pretty appropriate! Like any new business, you’re going to work a lot of hours for peanuts. But if you keep going, month after month, year after year, the paycheques get bigger.

Do you have any advice for people who are interested in working behind-the-scenes in the adult industry? Whether that’s on the digital side or in production.

A lot of people think that adult always equals easy money. It’s still a business, and though it might be easier to make money starting an adult business compared to a cupcake shop downtown, it’s still going to take a lot of effort. You’ll have an easier time if you approach it like any other industry, any other brand new business or brand.

Because the adult industry is more hush-hush than others, it’s tougher to place ads for help wanted. If you’re a graphic designer, coder, webmaster or anything inbetween, reach out to companies and let them know what you can do for them and their company. Toss your hat in the ring. Even if they don’t need your help right then, you’ll be on their short list of who to contact when they do need help. Otherwise, take the bull by the horns and start your own venture using your skills - that way you can control your own ceiling.

Same question, but for models and performers – what advice do you have for models who are just starting out?

Create, upload, repeat. This is a big stumbling block I’ve seen creators have. The more content you create, the more people will subscribe, or follow, or retweet.. the list goes on.

Don’t overthink it. Figure out your workflow, and do it as often as possible.

Don’t compare your beginning to someone else's middle. To create beautiful videos or photos, it’s taken them a lot of trial and error, and you’ll need to do the same. I see a lot of models comparing their unedited content to other people's edited (but not noticably edited) content and getting discouraged.

Be the best version of you, that’s the ace in your pocket. There is no one else that can be a better you than you can! Create what you’re passionate about, it’ll show, and you’ll find your fanbase. If you try to create what you think will sell or is popular, but you don’t enjoy it, get ready for a quick burn out.

Figure out what your comfort levels are, and stick to them (until you’re comfortable changing them, if you ever are). Take care of yourself and your mental health, because adult can be a whirlwind mentally sometimes.

"My secret sauce is my passion."

You’re ranked in the top 50 pornstars on Pornhub. What factors do you think contributed to your success in that ranking?

I think there must have been a glitch in your software.  [Laughs] Honestly though, I started in adult behind the scenes because I battle self-confidence - I think there are SO many gorgeous people and amazing entertainers in adult, and on Pornhub. I think my secret sauce is my passion, because I film with my husband and only film what we enjoy - I think it's infectious.

Your content and photos look great. Are you willing to share your camera/equipment setup?

Thank you! Our gear is changing constantly, James loves all the new tech equipment. James will often show off the new tech equipment we get for shooting on our YouTube channel, or he'll mention if something ends up being shit in a vlog.

James: Sony A7R III (mainly for photos, but also 4K video) + Canon 80D (for video only) are the cameras.  For lenses we use several ranging from Sony 24-70GM F2.8, Zeiss 55mm F1.8 and others and then for Canon.. Canon 10-14mm F4.5 is the primary we use.

When was Bryci.com launched?

February of 2009, we’re almost 10 years old! I was working in adult behind the scenes for 3 years before that.

What do you wish you had known when you were first setting up your website?

That people are going to think shit things about me no matter if I was “just” a nude model, or if I was filming my sex life. So going back, I wish I had taken the hardcore leap way back when I started, because porn makes nice money. :)

What has brought in the most revenue for you between clip-selling sites (like Modelhub), tube sites (like Pornhub), and your own website?

By far my website, Bryci.com.  I think this will be different for every different person's situation though. A website is a brand new entity that needs constant promotion. A clipsite already has the traffic, so does Pornhub.  They’re all different animals, choose whichever one suits your needs better, or try them all to see what you enjoy the most.

Your YouTube channel is super informative, and you’ve got almost 100k subscribers. What tactics have you used to build a following on YouTube?

T&A. Hey, just being honest! We use our YouTube channel to connect with our fans, but also to promote our pay stuff to a brand new audience. YouTube is super strict and tricky to navigate if you have the mindset of “but I saw this other youtuber do it”. With every site you’re going to participate on, read the TOS.

"The internet moves fast - if you aren’t active often, you’ll be forgotten quickly."

Can you give us a brief overview of your marketing strategy for your content?

I actually started my website as a blog, long before I turned it into a paysite. Having years of traffic already going to my site because of my blog was great. If you have a website, you need a free blog, and to learn how to utilize it for traffic.

For social, do something every day. It doesn’t have to be advertising every single day, and it shouldn’t because you’ll be annoying and lose people. Invite people into your life, let them fall in love with you, and then tell them where to watch your porn. The internet moves fast - if you aren’t active often, you’ll be forgotten quickly.

Use hashtags and tags (on social, and Pornhub, and blogging) to your fullest ability. Max out that description. Write a title that your target customer is going to be Googling for.

You’ve mentioned wanting to do more cosplay. What characters will we see next from you?

I really couldn’t say as I let my fans decide! I often will ask what they want to see, and I’ve gotten some cool not-so-well-known character ideas this way.

What’s something aspiring models can do to take their content from “average” to “spectacular”?

Pornhub is great for research! Use it to watch the top content, most viewed, and so on. Try to find similarities. Maybe you’ll find a new blowjob technique, or a fantastic angle for the camera during sex that you hadn’t thought about.

Any upcoming projects you’d like to tell us about?

Yes, James and I are starting a podcast!  We’ll be recording them and putting them on our YouTube channel as well as everywhere you can get podcasts, and we’re doing 2 a week!

One will be a Sex Talk focused podcast, the other will be a general chat. If you grab the Anchor app you can search “ourbellalife” and leave us a voicemail that we can play on air!

I hope that helps anyone out there. James and I love seeing people enjoy their sex life and be in control of their future.  If anyone has any questions feel free to hit us up!

"We are real, and so is our porn."

If you asked people to describe their dream life, you might get a few different answers - "I want to travel as much as I can." "I want to escape my office job." "I want to start my own business." "I want to fuck beautiful people on the beach for the rest of my life."

Not a lot of people can say that they're already living all of those things.

But MySweetApple can.

I had the pleasure of chatting with them, and learned how they left their ordinary life behind to become full-time hedonists. It's easier than you think:

Let’s start off with the MySweetApple story. How did you meet?

We were both working at IBM South America and met on a trip we went on with some mutual work friends. We had never talked to each other before, but from that day on we became best friends. About a month afterwards we had sex for the first time along with a friend of ours. We had just come back from a party and after a lot of touching, kissing and caressing we decided to go to Kim’s place together, and we finished the three of us on bed, making out and giving each other oral. It was our first sex experience together and it was with another girl. After a few kinky moments, she had to go. Once we were left alone, we fucked for a whole week - we didn’t even want to leave the house, we couldn’t stop being all over each other. The sexual chemistry was incredible. We also realized we had a lot in common, and the happiest surprise was to discover we were both big exhibitionists. It all went upwards since then.

When and how did you start filming together?

As it always does, it all started with a smartphone. He was recording me sucking his dick and then we thought, why don’t we do a full scene? So we did. After that, we wanted to improve the quality, so we switched to an action cam, added better lighting and even added a plot to our scene. We produced tons of videos but not for profit or with the intention of sharing them - it was all for us. We had a camera fetish since the beginning; we’ve been doing porn for a long time before actually doing the porn that you can all see here.

Your video editing is great. What software do you use for editing?

Mostly we use Premiere Pro for editing and blurring, but After Effects is also a great tool for special effects, and visual corrections. For sound editing we use Adobe Audition and Ableton Live to make our own music.

How did you learn to edit videos?

Video tutorials on YouTube. Paolo has an IT background and he’s a media designer, which gives him the base to be an autodidact. Since we started traveling, the chances to study long courses are null, because most take 6 months at least, and we move every 3 months - so the solution was on the internet. Watching tutorials, following guides, I watch 5 to 20 video tutorials per day. You should try it with everything! The Internet isn’t just for fun and porno, there is tons of content people are happy to share and explain.

What’s your lighting setup when you film at home?

We always try to take advantage of the daylight, it just makes all the scenes a lot more beautiful and natural, but when we need artificial lights, we use two studio LED lights and a small light attached to the camera.

"Make videos that actually turn you on."

Do you pay much attention to your sound/audio? If so, what microphones or equipment do you use?

We are temporarily using a Sony Shotgun microphone - I say temporarily because we are always upgrading our equipment. Sometimes when we’re shooting an outdoor scene we cannot go with a professional camera and mic because we need discretion, so we use the integrated microphone on the action cam or smartphone. After recording we control and remaster the sound with Adobe Audition.

What’s something simple models can do to improve their videos?

Invest in good lighting and audio, be aware of new trends and styles but at the same time show your own style. Porn is an ocean of content, so you have to be unique and original, but most importantly - patient. Make videos that actually turn you on, make your fantasies come to life! All our videos are based on our own kinks (and some on kinks our followers commissioned from us) and we always end up fucking or masturbating to them. We’re our own biggest consumers.

Let’s talk about marketing a bit. How important is social media for your marketing?

It’s the most important tool we have right now, and we couldn’t have achieved any of this without social media. Thanks to having a curated Instagram profile and being consistent with our posts we’ve been contacted by newspapers, tv shows and radio to interview us, which means thousands of new followers and customers each time. Thanks to sharing our news and thoughts on Twitter we’ve been hit up by other models, we’ve been hired to do shows for other companies and even to translate/design for others (which were our professions before doing porn). Being active on social media puts you and your product in the loop, and it lets your fans know who you really are. It’s the only tool that allows you to be in contact with the consumer - they can see us living our life and we can get real feedback from them. We also let people be part of our decisions related to videos, travel destinations and even clothing.

You also have your own website. What do you use the website for?

It’s our Frankenstein! It started as a simple web with a contact form because we started as webcam broadcasters, then it evolved to a custom video, private shows and Snapchat request forms, and now it’s our library, we collected all our services from all third-party websites and social media and integrated everything there, we also have our Pornhub videos embedded. There our followers can find all our videos, photo sets and social media, know when and where we’re online, they can also design their own custom content, schedule private shows, buy our used underwear, read our story, from how we met to awards we won, interviews, milestones and basically everything we are as MySweetApple. We’ve also recently started writing our blog, where we’ll share important news, advise and real life erotic stories.

When you’re uploading to Pornhub, do you pay much attention to your video titles?

Yes, a lot! Titles are the hardest and should be carefully chosen. Your video’s success will depend a lot on your title. Same with the thumbnails - it can make a video stand out, or it can make it look like yet another low-quality sex tape. We try to point out the most important features of the video while trying not to make it too robotic or simply too descriptive. Tags are also a very important tool that allow you to complete the title and let everyone find your video based on what it includes.

Do you have any plans to sell videos on Modelhub? If so, what will your strategy be?

Absolutely yes! To start with, our followers will be able to download our most popular videos on Pornhub, and we’re adding all our outdoors, roleplays, public and wildest videos in places such as a nudist city, all around exciting cities like Rome, Barcelona, Buenos Aires and Cancun! This is our exclusive content and we can’t wait to share it with our Pornhub followers!

"They want to see their own life reflected in the porn they watch."

What advice do you have for someone who’s just starting in the industry?

Don’t rush. Enjoy every step. Some days are awful, some others are incredible, don’t get used to any of them. Succeeding is a matter of very hard and constant work, so don’t give up too soon and never settle. We see hundreds of couples who contact us for advice, and after a few weeks they just quit. You need to know that porn is like a normal business, you have to work hard! It does grow faster than any other content, but still you have to be patient, and not too emotional - sometimes people are very rude, there are a lot of trolls, bad competitors, haters, but they are not against you, they are just part of the internet ecosystem. Focus on the other part, the bigger one: the audience who loves you, and ignore competition, be neutral, be yourself, have fun!

What changes do you think we’ll see in the industry in 2018?

We’re seeing the amateur world taking over professional porn, because people like relating with the people on screen - they want to see their own life reflected in the porn they watch and maybe recreate a scene they lived with a past partner. Amateur porn has brought many diverse faces, body shapes and personalities that are different from what people are used to seeing in porn. That adds a real-life value to the videos that makes it all more exciting. Porn is taking part in society, sex is not a taboo anymore, and more people are joining this fetish every day, sharing their intimacy and fantasies. We are real, and so is our porn.

What changes would you like to see in the industry in 2018?

What we want is to be recognized as people with rights and choice. We don’t do porn because of the money or because we’re brainwashed or because we have daddy or mommy issues. We do porn because having amazing sex is part of our lifestyle, and we’re open-minded enough to share our sex lives with the world. Still we must fight prejudices, discrimination and censorship. In our utopia we all practice free love, respect and understanding.

How can the average person support sex workers on a day-to-day basis?

The obvious way to support a sex worker is by buying our products. Of course we all love free porn, but if the free video is good, imagine the one for sale, and the wet panties, and the custom content! We put so much effort and hard work into everything we do, that each sale warms our hearts because we understand the gesture of trust and admiration. Other ways of helping are spreading the word, let everyone know how good our work is. You love our video? Don’t download it and share it - share the link to our authorized sites, make more people know about us, watch, comment, retweet, thumbs up, shout outs, spread the word! What’s the funniest or weirdest thing that ever happened during a shoot?

We’ll never forget the day we were shooting our video “Teen Couple fucking in Cap D’Agde." it was set in the Naked City in France, a place where nudism and outdoor sex are allowed and loved by everyone. It was our little paradise for a week. While having sex behind a bush, enjoying the wind and the sun on our skins, one by one a crowd of about 10 guys gathered around us, all with their cocks out, masturbating and being very careful not to enter in the camera angle. We did the full video and when Paolo cums on my face they started clapping and came to shake hands with us, it was hilarious! We even gave them our official stickers and a couple of them became very good followers and customers.

Any upcoming projects you’d like to tell us about?

This year we did our “first” threesome and it was an incredibly horny bonding experience for us. Our fans were exhilarated with the videos, so we’d love to repeat some more of that with other girls and boys. We’ve opened a contact form on our site for other performers to reach out. Soon you’ll see all the videos in our Modelhub account!

Around September we’re traveling back to Europe, we miss the nudist beaches (and cities) and the erotic panorama overall. We have big plans for MySweetApple but we’re keeping them a secret, not to spoil it too early, but make sure to follow us, you don’t want to miss the news - lots of new content is arriving soon!

Thanks again to MySweetApple for sharing their story, expertise and insights. Pornhub wouldn't exist without content creators like them, and we're forever grateful.
